Heartburn:Some patients may experience heartburn, often the result of frequent heartburn. If you have heartburn, contact a physician right away if you notice purple or red spots or an irregularly shaped stomach. The exact cause of heartburn is unknown, but the symptoms are often the same for all heartburn sufferers. When Nexium is taken as directed, it may help patients who have heartburn manage their symptoms more effectively.
In addition to heartburn, certain patients also may experience nausea, bloating, and stomach upset when taking Nexium.

In rare cases, more serious side effects like liver injury, anemia, or an increased risk of heart attack have occurred when Nexium is taken as directed. These side effects are generally mild and tend to resolve on their own.
